Bluebird Self-Storage comes to Southern Ontario

Bluebird Self-Storage is expanding into Southern Ontario, bringing much needed self-storage services into the GTA’s underserved market. With over 44 per cent of Torontonians living in some form of an apartment, and that number set to increase in the coming years (Statistics Canada Census 2016), self-storage is a vital component to the lives for many of the seven million people the GTA.

Recognizing the need for Class-A self-storage, Bluebird Self-Storage has quickly established 11 premium locations in the Greater Toronto Area, including redevelopment of the former National Post office site at 1450 Don Mills Road.

“Canada is considerably less saturated with self-storage supply despite consistent population growth,” says Reade DeCurtins, principal at Bluebird Self-Storage. “We believe there is tremendous runway available for Canadian self-storage development, especially and initially in the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe.”

Bluebird has partnered with Life Storage to grow its portfolio. “Having worked with Life Storage for many years, we have seen the success and innovation of their operational and technology platforms, such as Rent Now, their fully-digital rental platform that allows customers to self-serve and complete their rental process online,” says DeCurtins.

The expansion further cements Bluebird’s status as a leader in self-storage, with over 80 self storage facilities in North America since 1983, and 25 properties in Ontario over the past 15 years.

The Bluebird Partners and Managing Principals Reade DeCurtins and Jamie Bennet, have over 75 years combined successful self-storage industry development and management experience in North America. That includes active development over the past 15 years in Ontario where they have developed over 25 properties and over 50 locations in the U.S. Some have been sold, and others retained in various partnerships.

Bluebird’s expansion into Southern Ontario includes giving other self-storage owners immediate exposure to a larger customer base through opprotunities under the Bluebird management umbrella.
