F
rancois Legault, the leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec
party since its foundation in 2011, won power by taking 74
seats in the 125-seat national assembly on October 1.
It was an historic first win for the CAQ, outing the Liberal majority
government in the process.
“Tonight, we made history,” said Legault from his victory podium.
“Today, Quebecers chose hope, hope for a government that will
bring positive change. We are going to give everything we can to
answer that hope, especially for families, for children, and for elderly
who built this modern Quebec. We have immense challenges ahead
of us but we Quebecers are able to meet those challenges.”
Legault was elected by running on a platform of making more money
available for families through tax cuts, cutting immigration, and a
secular charter.
