EDITOR’S LETTER
his is a very special editorial note to
write because it allows me the great
privilege of welcoming the young-
T est member of the BEC team to this
world. In early March, our publisher and his wife
welcomed their first child, a healthy boy named
Aiden.
Our cover story features the Town of Mara-
thon, ON. With its origins as a company town—
Marathon was the name of the pulp and paper
company which operated in the town for de-
cades—Marathon is now setting its sights on
diversification.

It’s a story we’ve seen time and again in this
country; a major industry shuts down, be it the
cod industry, oil, mining, and the town leans on
its determination and grit to write a new chap-
ter for itself. We are reminded of Smiths Falls,
whose identity as the cannabis capital of Cana-
