Also making headlines is the
Canadian Museum for Hu-
man Rights, which is cer-
tain to shine an international
spotlight on Winnipeg when
it opens in September. The
$351-million museum–the first
national museum to be locat-
ed outside the National Capi-
tal Region – is situated at The
Forks, a 6,000-year-old meet-
ing place framed by the banks
of the Assiniboine and Red
rivers and nestled in the heart
of downtown Winnipeg. As
well, $200 million has been
earmarked for the Journey
to Churchill exhibit, opening
later this year at Assiniboine
Park, located within one of
North America’s largest urban
forests.
A consummate four-season
city, Winnipeggers are con-
stantly outside and active.
“We’ve spearheaded a major
initiative in active transporta-
tion, and we continue to ex-
pand on our transportation
network,” says Mayor Katz.
“Since 2008, over $80 mil-
lion has been invested in ac-
tive-transportation facilities
in the form of cycling paths,
pedestrian corridors, buffered
bike lanes and dedicated AT
bridges. We continue to fund
these kinds of transportation
initiatives to ensure Winnipeg
remains active-transportation
friendly. I think we’re making
tremendous progress on this
front.”
