“Canada’s modern ships need equally mod-
ern infrastructure,” says Clive H. Orford, the
Project Director in Ottawa. Orford is part of a
team put together by the Department of Na-
tional Defence (DND) to replace infrastruc-
ture in CFB Esquimalt on Vancouver Island.
In 2013, the DND announced plans to replace
the two main jetties with modern jetties ship
berthing facilities that will support the size
and scope of Canada’s current and future
Pacific Naval Fleet. We spoke with Orford
and Tonya Hughes, Project Manager, about
the significance of the project for the Cana-
dian Navy. Aside for the enormous complex-
ity of the project, this has not been a unique
undertaking—the concurrent Esquimalt Har-
bour Remediation Project has unearthed rel-
ics from past naval activity and pre-contact
Indigenous artifacts. “It’s not your typical day
in the office,” Hughes told us, and you’ll read
more about why inside.
This month’s issue profiles diverse companies
and groups from coast to coast to coast. One
of the only common denominators across
the board is companies are looking at alter-
native energy sources to lower their opera-
tion costs. For over fifteen years, the Ontario
Sustainability Energy Association (OSEA)
has worked for a more sustainable energy
economy for all Ontarians. As “the Voice of
Sustainable Energy” in the province, OSEA
has worked to promote greater use of re-
newable energy sources and encourage new
technology. We hope our readers will find
cost-effective solutions to energy consump-
tion in our interview with Dan Goldberger,
Chair of the OSEA Board of Directors.
