A: In 1969 when I moved here our 401-population sign read 12,000 Q: Do you have a favourite hidden gem in Ajax that most people wouldn’t know about? A: The Greenwood Conservation Area Q: If you could take a visitor to just one place in Ajax to capture its spirit, where would it be? A: The Ajax Waterfront Q: What’s your favourite Ajax event or festival? A: The Ajax Mayor’s Gala is my favourite event, but Trailfest, including the 44 Mayor’s Ride is a close second. Q: What’s a meal or food spot in Ajax you’d recommend to someone visiting for the first time? A: Sushi T&T – My go to sushi spot! Q: If you could step back to Ajax in the 1950s for a day, what would you most like to experience? A: The first Council. Our first mayor, Benjamin deForest “Pat” Bayly, a Canadian engineer and University of Toronto professor, worked at the secret intelligence base Camp X, where he developed a cipher machine which was used for secure Allied communications. I would have loved to know the secrets of our “Spy Mayor”. Q: What’s a fun fact about Ajax that still surprises even long-time residents? A: All our streets are named after HMS Veteran’s that served on the HMS Ajax, HMNZS Achilles & HMS Exeter. Q: Which part of the 70th anniversary celebrations are you personally most excited for? A: Since the Inaugural Gala in June 2019, the Ajax Mayor’s Gala has raised $1,700,000 net to support organizations making a meaningful impact in our community.
