It was only a few weeks ago on an icy night in Saskatche-
wan that a tragic accident killed 16 people, including 10
junior hockey players, and injured 13 others. Canadians
from all over the country felt the pain of the Humboldt
community, setting hockey sticks out on their porches in
solidarity with the families and friends.
A GoFundMe account in support of the families raised
over $15 million in only 12 days. In the face of unspeak-
able sadness, it was a bright spot illustrative of the Ca-
nadian spirit and the way we help our neighbours. We dedicate this issue to the
spirit of #HumboldtStrong.
Our cover article features an interview with Grand Chief Bosum of the Cree Na-
tion of Eeyou Istchee. It’s rare that we profile of company that doesn’t have a
partnership with a First Nation company or community, and a comprehensive en-
gagement strategy is a vital component to remain successful in the resource sec-
tor. Grand Chief Bosum, the recipient of Canada’s Aboriginal Achievement Award
and an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree from Bishop’s University, spoke with
us about paving the way for partnerships between Indigenous communities and
Corporate Canada, outlining the positive benefits to both.
Among other illuminative conversations we had this month was our interview
with Sandro Perruzza, President of Ontario Society of Professional Engineers
(OSPE). With over 6,000 engineers graduate from one of Ontario’s 17 programs
annually, the OSPE wants the public to realize the multi-faceted role they play in
the economy.
