The Municipality of Leamington, tucked away on the southernmost point of
mainland Canada, is an iconic Ontario destination for many reasons. Some
remember it as the “Tomato Capital of Canada”, marked by the giant red
tomato that served as a landmark for anyone visiting the area. Nature lov-
ers flock to Point Pelee National Park, eager to see the myriad of migrating
birds and Monarch butterflies that make regular stops in the area before
heading out across Lake Erie.
The area is home to the country’s second warmest climate, surpassed only
by British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. Residents and visitors alike enjoy
the region’s many attributes, from fresh produce to outdoor activities that
can include cycling, boating and nature walks.
In this issue, BEC writer Rajitha Sivakumaran spoke with Mayor John Paterson and Jeanine Lassaline-Ber-
glund, the municipality’s economic development officer. Along with its outdoorsy attributes, the area is
experiencing economic growth thanks to its high concentration of commercial greenhouses and a healthy
manufacturing environment. Health care and tourism also contribute to Leamington’s success, and the mu-
nicipality is expected to enjoy a period of solid stability and growth during the coming years.
Also in this issue:
• FirstTel Communications caters to both residential and commercial clients, but what makes it truly unique
is the fact that it is owned by the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve of Manitoulin Island. The company,
founded in 2003, served as the community’s first link to phone service.
• Statistics show that more than half of Canadians over the age of 18 are either overweight or obese. It’s a
health epidemic that can have both a personal and professional impact but according to professionals at
the Wharton Medical Clinic, there is more that businesses can do to help employees adopt and maintain a
healthier lifestyle.
• From the renovation of a home in one of Toronto’s high-end neighbourhoods to the construction of a Ca-
ribbean villa, ACI Wright Architects utilizes a start-to-finish process to bring life to their stunning architec-
tural designs.
