As the architect of the first modern land
treaty signed in Canada, Charlie Watt
Senior’s impact on Aboriginal rights in
Canada is hard to underestimate. In our
cover feature, we spoke to Watt about
his continued work on behalf of the Inu-
it people and Inuit rights in this country.
Watt has worked with Prime Ministers
from Pierre Trudeau to Justin Trudeau,
and has recently accepted the position
of President of the Makivik Corporation
(which he founded in 1978). Makivik
Corporation has created a template for
many other Aboriginal, First Nation,
and Metis corporations that exist for
the preservation and promotion of their
cultures.
This month, we also go to the town of
Smiths Falls, the new epicentre of can-
nabis in Canada, to learn how the in-
dustry has turned the town’s fortunes
around almost over night. This and the
other profiles in this issue illustrate the
entrepreneurial spirit of Canadians,
and we are proud to start 2019 off on
such strong footing. We hope you enjoy
these stories.
